What is flame resistant workwear?
Flame resistant, or FR, clothing is designed to resist igniting and to stop burning when the source of the flame is removed. It helps protect workers in jobs where there is a risk of flames, heat, molten metal splashes or electric arc. Ordinary workwear can catch fire and continue to burn, which is why FR garments are used where those risks exist.
Which jobs may need FR clothing?
- Welding, cutting and metal fabrication.
- Foundries and work with molten metal.
- Some electrical work with a risk of arc flash.
- Oil, gas and chemical sites.
- Some utilities and maintenance roles.
Whether your team needs FR clothing depends on your risk assessment. The Health and Safety Executive's guidance on personal protective equipment at work explains employers' duties to assess risks and provide suitable PPE.
Which standards should FR clothing meet?
FR garments are tested against standards for different hazards, such as heat and flame, welding or electric arc. The garment label shows which standards it meets. Check that the standards match the hazards in your risk assessment, and ask your safety adviser if you are unsure. Some sites and clients also set their own requirements.
Can you add a logo to FR clothing?
Branding FR garments needs care. Ordinary threads and printed transfers may not be flame resistant, and adding them could affect the garment's protection. Before branding FR clothing, check the manufacturer's guidance on decoration. We will advise on suitable options, such as FR-compatible methods, and in some cases the safest answer is to keep branding off the garment or use the manufacturer's own branding options.
How should FR clothing be cared for?
Follow the care label closely. Some FR fabrics are inherently flame resistant, while others are treated, and incorrect washing can affect performance. Our workwear care guide covers general washing tips, but the FR label always comes first.
What other workwear does your team need?
Teams that need FR for some tasks often wear standard branded workwear for the rest of the day. Our construction workwear page covers everyday options, and our flame resistant range lists FR garments we can supply. If you also run events, our guide to charity and event t-shirts may help.

Frequently asked questions about FR workwear
Does my team need flame resistant clothing?
It depends on your risk assessment. Jobs with a risk of flames, heat, molten metal or electric arc often require FR clothing. Check with your health and safety adviser.
Can you embroider flame resistant workwear?
It depends on the garment and the manufacturer's guidance, because ordinary decoration may affect protection. We will check the garment and advise on suitable options before anything is added.
Can I mix FR and standard workwear in one order?
Yes. Many teams order FR garments for specific tasks alongside standard branded polos and jackets for the rest of the day.
Do you supply the clothing as well as add the logo?
Yes. We supply the garments from trade brands such as Portwest, Regatta, Result, Gildan and Fruit of the Loom, then embroider or print them, so you deal with one supplier from start to finish.
Is there a minimum order?
We welcome small orders as well as large ones, so a sole trader kitting out one van and a club ordering a full squad are both looked after. Tell us your quantity when you ask for a quote and we will advise on the best value option.
